Governance

Maltby Learning Trust is committed to delivering the very best educational experience for all children and young people in Rotherham.

Our Trust operates as a single trust multi-academy sponsor which is governed by a Board of Trustees. The Board of Trustees works with each of the Local Governance Committees to recruit Governors in each of its Academies, usually drawn from the local community.

The Trust Board provides:

  • Strategic Leadership of the Trust: the Board defines the Trust vision for high-quality and inclusive education in line with its charitable objects.

    • It establishes and fosters the Trust’s culture and sets and champions the Trust strategy, including determining what governance functions are delegated to the Local Governance Committees.

  • Accountability and assurance: the Board has robust effective oversight of the operations and performance of the Academy Trust, including:

    • The provision of education

    • Pupil welfare

    • Overseeing and ensuring appropriate use of funding

    • Effective financial performance

    • Keeping the estate safe and well maintained

  • Engagement: the board has strategic oversight of relationships with stakeholders

    • The board involves parents/carers, schools and communities, so that decision-making is supported by meaningful engagement.

The MLT Board delegates extensive powers to Local Governance Committees.

Each Governance Committee has responsibility for providing high quality provision within the set budget and is expected to challenge and monitor the performance of its academy, securing excellent educational provision and outcomes for all children and young people.

MLT Governance Model

Maltby Learning Trust consists of three tiers of Governance

1: THE MEMBERS

The role of the Members:

  • Appoint the auditors
  • Appoint Directors/Trustees

2: THE TRUST BOARD OF DIRECTORS

The Trust Board of Directors considers the vision and aims of the Trust and its academies, as well as strategy and policy to deliver its key objectives. The Board’s primary objectives are to ensure the delivery the best possible outcomes for all students, and to hold the Executive leaders to account for the ways in which this is carried out.

The Board of Directors are responsible for three core governance functions.

  • Ensure the quality of provision
  • Ensure compliance with charity and company law
  • Ensure operation in accordance with the funding agreement

3: LOCAL GOVERNANCE COMMITTEES

The Local Governance Committees provide focused governance for each Academy at a local level.
